Chiropractic & chiropractors

What is chiropractic and who is chiropractic?

Doctors of chiropractic are specialized in spinal care. Their main concern is the relationship between spinal column and its discs at one end and spinal cord and nerves at the other end. And concern about the effect of this relationship with health.

Chiropractors do not utilize drugs or surgery in their practice. However, there are times when a chiropractor will recommend that the patient consult another practitioner if other methods of treatment indicated.

Offices can support rehabilitation with modalities and exercises or nutritional advices.

Spine & nervous

The nervous system controls and coordinates every function of your body. It is your nervous system that allows you to adapt to, and live in your environment.

A large portion of your nervous system passes through the spine; it is your spinal cord that acts as the major cable exiting your brain, travels down inside your spinal column and branches off into spinal nerves at various levels of your spine.

These spinal nerves then exit between individual spinal vertebrae and go to the various parts of your body.

To be healthy it is essential that your nervous system function properly and free from any interference caused by subluxations This subluxations can cause interference to the nervous system at any point along the spine where the nerves exit.

This can adversely affect the function of various parts of your body, and ultimately your health. As everything we do depends on getting a proper

supply of nerve energy throughout our body. This energy is the life force that is vital to every aspect of our existence.

What is (Subluxation)?

A Subluxation is when one or more of the bones of spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in the spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves, which disrupt the normal transmission of nerve energy. If happen our body can’t function at peak performance. Sometimes, this will cause outward symptoms such as pain or illness.

At other times, it can decrease resistance in an organ or system. Or it can produce a general decline in physical, emotional or chemical efficiency.

As the nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of our body, If interference with the signals traveling over nerves takes place, parts of our body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate abilities.

Since each individual is unique, the effect of spinal nerve interference is different for each person.

What are the causes of Subluxation?

Many things can cause subluxation. Such as road accidents, sports injury or even regular work habits as prolonged standing or sitting. Furthermore it can start during labor of babies as they pass through birth canal normally or by forceps or hand assistance.

Chiropractic Technique

1. Activator & Impulse Instrument

The activator is a hand-held, spring-loaded instrument that produces a thrust by the mechanical triggering of the practitioners hand. The Impulse gun is another hand-held instrument that produces a more rapid-fire thrust with the use of an electrically charged coil, kind of like a small, electric jack-hammer.

These act as tools that the chiropractor may use to deliver low force, but quick thrusts, to specific points along the spine. Research suggests that this type of adjustment affects the nervous system in profound ways. As it stimulates pressure and position receptors on vertebrae joints so help to reset normal posture.

Instrument assisted adjustments are commonly selected for children, the elderly, and any patient who presents with contraindications to other, more forceful types of treatment.

2. Activator technology

Activator method Chiropractic Technique involves analyzing the length of the legs, and determining whether a pelvic deficiency is present. Since each person stands and holds their hips in a different way the result can be excessive pressure on one side; over time a difference in leg length may contribute to pain in the hips and leg joints. The Activator Methods technique aims to restore the body by correcting vertebral and pelvic misalignments using an Activator mallet to push and set the joints back into the correct position.

3.Drop Table

In these techniques regular bench is replaced by a moving parts table. Each moving part drops in an angle that matches the area of spine adjusted from neck to pelvis. This way decrease the load patient feel during adjustment and accelerates motion. Many techniques use the principle of drop. Aim to the same intention of adjustment to correct motion, alignment and/or function of vertebral joint.

a.Toggle drop: When we use crossed hands and press down firmly on a particular area of spine. Then with a quick and precise trust adjusting the spine. This is done to improve mobility in vertebral joint and is Widely used in upper cervical region.

b.Thompson Technique: A variation of diversified technique using the drop table. The segment being adjusted is cocked up a fraction of an inch. So that when the trust is delivered, the table will drop down along with the spinal segment that is being adjusted. The table movement adds speed to the trust and minimizes the force needed.

4. Flexion Distraction Technique:

Flexion-distraction involves the use of a specialized table that gently “distracts” or stretches the spine. This allows the chiropractor to isolate the affected area while slightly “flexing” the spine using a pumping rhythm.

There is usually no pain associated with this treatment. Instead, the flexion-distraction technique’s gentle pumping to the painful area allows the center of the intervertebral disc (called the nucleus pulposus) to assume its central position in the disc. Flexion-distraction may also improve disc height.

This technique can help move the disc away from the nerve, reducing inflammation of the nerve root, and eventually any associated pain and inflammation into the leg (if there is any related to your herniated disc).

With flexion-distraction, you generally need a series of treatments combined with adjunctive physiotherapy, supplementation, and at-home treatments (your chiropractor will let you know what those are).

5. Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT):

In this chiropractic technique we use triangular-shaped blocks that act as wedges which are placed at specific positions under the pelvis of the patient.

This helps the entire spine by increasing the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid that provides nutrients to the central and peripheral nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerve roots).

Low force, slow pressure types of manipulation to the skull, which specifically follow the patient’s deep breathing pattern, may be used. Inhalation and exhalation patterns correspond to pelvic (Sacro-iliac) and cranial (Occipital) distortions, since these are the only two places in the body where the meninges, which covers the brain and spinal cord, directly attach to the skeleton.

6.Craneal Technique:

chiropractic manipulations applied to the joints and sutures of the skull. Since the anatomy and physiology of the skull joints are different than those found in the rest of the body, the style of their manipulation is different. Cranial adjustments are made by following patients breathing patters while gently pushing on specific joint sutures in specific directions. The sutures of the skull are like gears in a watch. Pushing on one bone of the skull is like turning one gear in a watch, in that it directly and indirectly turns the other bones (gears).

7.Full Spine

Full Spine The most common technique used in chiropractic clinics. It is as old as the profession itself. It is a development of old Meric and palmer and Stephenson techniques and widely taught in chiropractic colleges with some variations.

It is a hand art skill depends on placing the force on subluxated segment with either recoil or trust impacts. Diagnosing such segment take place by palpation or heat sensing instruments where a fixated or misaligned segment identified. Systemic symptoms of diseased organ is taken in consideration depends on nerve supply. Patient is placed on a flat bench.

8. Diversified technique:

is the standard name for osseous (bony) adjustment of full spine. Technique applied to entire spinal column

segments from neck to pelvis. There are some 58 “set-ups” for correction of spine and some 140 for correction of extremities such as used for knee, ankle, elbow, shoulder and wrist.

9. Gonstead technique:

is one of full spine specific techniques where we use in addition to palpation and regular analysis the x-ray analysis to identify the exact misalignment of a segment.

In our office we apply the clinically taught technique with some modification depends on age, mobility and underlying bone condition.
